Electromagnetic Warfare in Demanding Conditions

Modern Electromagnetic Warfare systems must be able to operate not only in laboratory or standard operating conditions, but above all in real terrain. Demanding environments, complex terrain, limited availability of suitable positions, variable electromagnetic signal propagation conditions and the need for rapid deployment and redeployment are all factors that significantly affect the practical usability of these capabilities.

This is why it is important to test EW systems in different types of environments, including mountainous areas. Such conditions place high demands on mobility, modularity, deployment planning, selection of suitable positions and the ability to adapt the system configuration to the current operational situation.

A publicly available article by the Czech Armed Forces on the testing of an electronic warfare system in the Austrian mountains shows that armed forces are paying increasing attention to these practical aspects. Beyond technical parameters alone, the importance of being able to reliably move, deploy and operate the system in complex terrain, and then efficiently pack it up and redeploy it, is clearly confirmed.

For JISR Institute, this direction is also important from the perspective of integrating electronic warfare systems into the broader operational environment. In practice, modern EW capabilities are not defined only by the quality of individual sensors or assets. It is also essential to be able to process, assess and, when required, share their outputs with other users or systems.

In this context, command and control, data integration and interoperability also play an important role. In both national and coalition environments, it is increasingly important that individual electronic warfare assets can provide relevant information at the right time and in a format that can be further used.

One example of such an approach is CESMO, Cooperative Electronic Support Measure Operations. CESMO supports the sharing of information from electronic support measure systems among participating users and contributes to the creation of a common operational picture in the electromagnetic spectrum. It is therefore not only about detection itself, but also about the ability to use information effectively within a broader operational context.

Current developments confirm that the future of electronic warfare is not based solely on the performance of individual systems. Their practical deployability, resilience in demanding conditions, proper integration into the operational environment and ability to cooperate with other elements are equally important.
